In celebration of International Day for Women in Maritime, Fleet Management are highlighting the experiences of women who are shaping the future of the industry. This year’s theme, “An Ocean of Opportunities for Women”, encourages us to explore the stories behind the careers, passions, and ambitions of women at sea. Tune back in everyday this week to hear from stories from our different women seafarers.

Fleet Management Third Officer, Zhang Bihan, reflects on three important questions: what led her to consider a career at sea, what she enjoys most about working on board, and what advice she would offer to young women thinking about joining the maritime industry.
Zhang began her maritime journey after studying Navigation Technology at university. At the time, she was unsure whether she could adapt to life at sea, so she took the opportunity to join as a deck cadet. It was during her internship that she discovered how much she enjoyed both the work and the lifestyle on board. That experience gave her the confidence to continue pursuing a career at sea, and she has remained committed to it ever since.
When asked about her favourite part of working at sea, Zhang speaks with warmth and appreciation. She is especially drawn to the natural beauty of the ocean.
“I love the sunrise and sunset at sea the most, they are beautiful sights which are rarely seen in the city, and I capture the beauty of these moments with my camera, to share with my friends and family back home”
To young women who are considering a future in maritime, Zhang offers practical and heartfelt advice. She encourages thoughtful self-assessment, especially when it comes to one’s passion for navigation and the ability to adapt to long periods away from land.
“Prove yourself through your capabilities, find ways to manage stress, such as through exercise, painting, or reading, and maintain a healthy balance between work and rest.”
Zhang believes that while the challenges of a seafaring life are real, so too are the rewards. Accomplishments gain deeper resonance in environments where representation is evolving. Thriving in maritime fields enriches the sense of pride in every success.
“The sea does not care about gender, It rewards competence, courage, and curiosity.”
If you are drawn to adventure, growth, and a life less ordinary, then a career at sea may be the opportunity you have been looking for.
At Fleet Management, we are proud to support women like Zhang who continue to break barriers and inspire the next generation of seafarers. We remain committed to fostering an inclusive environment where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
