As part of our recognition of International Day for Women in Maritime, we are spotlighting the voices of our women seafarers who have forged their own path at sea. This year’s theme, An Ocean of Opportunities for Women, reminds us of the many ways women contribute to a more inclusive and dynamic maritime industry. Tune back in everyday this week to hear from stories from our different women seafarers.

Fleet Management Second Engineer, Sarmistha Roy, shares her thoughts on how she joined the profession, what keeps her motivated, and what she would tell other young women considering the same journey.
For Sarmistha, the decision to go to sea was not part of a long-held plan, it was a moment of opportunity. She came across an advertisement in a newspaper calling for young talent interested in maritime careers and decided to apply. That choice led her to study Marine Engineering at MANET in Pune, the subject was entirely new to her, but it quickly became a source of deep interest. Once she began sailing, she found herself completely drawn in.
“I fell in love with my job and sailing both, I have not looked back since.”
When reflecting on her favourite part of life at sea, Sarmistha speaks of the freedom and purpose that come with the role. Every day presents new technical challenges, and the experience of working alongside a diverse international crew adds meaning to her work.
“Handling real time issues on board gives me a sense of fulfilment that is hard to find anywhere else.”
Sarmistha encourages young women who are thinking about a career at sea to have confidence and embrace the journey. She acknowledges the demands of the profession but believes the rewards more than make up for them.
“This career will test your limits, but it will also shape you into a resilient, confident and capable individual. Believe in your abilities, be open to learning and do not be afraid to stand your ground.”
She wants to remind young talent who are interested in a life at sea, that the sea rewards dedication above all else.
“The sea does not discriminate, and neither should you when it comes to chasing your dreams.”
At Fleet Management, we are proud to share stories like Sarmistha’s and support our women seafarers who continue to lead by example across our fleet. We remain committed to creating equal opportunities at sea and fostering a maritime culture where all seafarers can thrive.
