Voices from the Sea: Niharika Sharma, Cadet

May 22, 2025

As part of our recognition of International Day for Women in Maritime, Fleet Management continues to highlight the journeys of our women seafarers who are helping shape the future of our industry. The theme for this year, “An Ocean of Opportunities for Women”, speaks to the growing number of roles available and the importance of ensuring women have the space and support to thrive at sea. Tune back in everyday this week to hear from stories from our different women seafarers.

Deck Cadet Niharika Sharma shares what led her to choose this path, what excites her most about life on board, and what she would say to those thinking about following in her footsteps.

For Neharika, the decision to pursue a maritime career was shaped by a deep interest in the lifestyle and responsibilities that come with working at sea, she was inspired by the unique mix of work, uniform, and structure that the profession offers.

“The life, work, uniform and responsibilities played a very crucial role in making my  mind to consider a career at sea.”

Now part of crew herself, Niharika finds great joy and fulfilment in being directly involved in global trade.

“My favourite thing about working at sea is the lifestyle and the working culture, it is fascinating to see how cargo is transported from one place to another through the seas with the help of machinery and competent people – and now I am also a part of it.”

Niharika encourages young women to step forward with confidence and a willingness to grow.

“Be confident, be strong, and start learning how to be responsible along with the ability to lead a team.”

She believes these qualities are key to building a successful and rewarding career at sea.

At Fleet Management, we are proud to support women like Niharika as they begin and grow their careers. We remain committed to building an inclusive maritime environment where women are empowered, equipped and encouraged to succeed across all levels of our fleet.
