Voices from the Sea: IMI cadet, Poonam Kumawat,

May 23, 2025

In celebration of International Day for Women in Maritime, Fleet Management is proud to share the stories of women whose determination and drive are helping to shape a more diverse and inclusive industry. This year’s theme, “An Ocean of Opportunities for Women”, highlights the growing possibilities for women across all areas of maritime, both at sea and ashore.

International Maritime Institute cadet, Poonam Kumawat, speaks about what inspired her to choose this path, what she values most about life on board, and the message she wants to pass on to other young women.

Poonam’s decision to pursue a career at sea was rooted in ambition, resilience and family.

“I chose the merchant navy to lift my family from struggle, to prove that a girl can dream beyond limits, and to embrace a life of purpose and adventure,”

With deep gratitude for her parents’ sacrifices, Poonam sees her career as a way to give back to them.

“Wearing that white uniform is not just a job, it is a statement that nothing is impossible.”

Life on board for Poonam, is both challenging yet transformative. She describes the experience as a powerful mix of freedom, learning and personal growth.

“Working at sea is a rare blend of adventure, freedom and unbreakable camaraderie, every challenge on board builds resilience and sharpens decision- making. It is a journey that shapes not just a career, but the person I am becoming.”

To young women considering a path in maritime, Poonam says.

“Know your strengths, do your research, and build the skills that matter, do not be afraid to take up space in a male-dominated field, you belong there. With confidence and passion, you will not just fit in, you will lead, grow and break barriers.”

Fleet Management is proud to support cadets as they complete their studies and pursue their careers at sea. We remain committed to building a more inclusive maritime industry, where women are equipped, empowered and inspired to thrive.
